VERSE: Very Early Rehabilitation in SpEech trial following stroke
A prospective multicentre, randomised controlled trial of Very Early Rehabilitation in Speech in patients with aphasia following acute stroke. Twenty five percent of 13,654 screened stroke patients had aphasia and of these 25% were trial eligible. Target recruitment of 246 participants was met. Baseline characteristics were equivalent for stroke and aphasia severity, age, gender and aetiology. The VERSE trial was completed with high fidelity data. Nine and a half hours of therapy yielded equivalent communication outcomes to 22 hours at 12 and 26 weeks post stroke.
